Celebrating Community Leader & Philanthropist
David Alvarez
United Way of Harrison and Doddridge Counties has named David B. Alvarez, a respected entrepreneur, business leader, and philanthropist from Bridgeport, as the 2026 Mountaineer of Honor. This distinction is the organization’s highest recognition, awarded to individuals whose professional accomplishments, private actions, and lifelong service have created a significant and lasting positive impact on Harrison County and North Central West Virginia.
The Mountaineer of Honor award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to community, meaningful philanthropic activity, and years of outstanding civic, professional, or charitable leadership. Alvarez’s life and work reflect these values in every respect.
“David is the true meaning of giving. No matter where he is or what he is doing, he is building bridges and bringing people together to create a better West Virginia. He is an inspiration to all who know him,” said Mark Urso, President Bear Contracting and Bear Utilities.
Over more than four decades, Alvarez has built and led multi‑industry enterprises that employ more than 700 people across West Virginia and surrounding states. As a Key Principal of Applied Construction Solutions (ACS), he oversees major energy infrastructure projects across the Eastern United States, the Midwest, Colorado, Idaho, and Texas. He is also the Founder and Owner of Energy Transportation, LLC, a regional leader in liquids and construction logistics. His business portfolio includes ownership and leadership roles in the historic Wonder Bar Steakhouse, East Pointe Auto Spa, D‑KAL Leasing, Trademark Aviation and Asturias Insurance Company.
His professional achievements are matched by a deep commitment to public service. Alvarez served ten years on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, including a pivotal term as Chairman during the university’s COVID‑19 transition. He has also served as Chairman of MVB Financial Corp. and as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond Industry Roundtable, contributing to regional and national economic discussions.
Alvarez’s philanthropic leadership has strengthened healthcare, youth development, and community safety throughout the region. He has held leadership roles with the United Health Foundation and the United Hospital Center Board, and he is a founding board member of GameChanger, a statewide, student-powered initiative focused on preventing substance misuse among young people. His longstanding support of Genesis Youth Crisis Center and his role in developing the Harrison County Law Enforcement Firearms Range earned him the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award in 2008.
“The committee selected David Alvarez as our 2026 honoree in appreciation of his unwavering generosity, leadership and dedication to ensuring that West Virginia continues to shine,” said Stephanie Goff, UWHDC Board President. “David is a recognized leader in business, job creation and philanthropy in our state, leaving a legacy of positive impact for our future generations to follow. The United Way board congratulates David on this esteemed acknowledgement.”
Alvarez is a graduate of West Virginia University with a B.S. in Business Administration and has been recognized with the WVU Business & Economics Roll of Distinguished Alumni and the J. Cecil Jarvis Commitment Award. He resides in Bridgeport with his wife, Kimberly (Mossor) Alvarez, and they are active members of All Saints Catholic Church. They are the proud parents of four married children and grandparents to five grandchildren.
The Mountaineer of Honor Dinner celebrating Alvarez will be held Tuesday, April 21st at 5:30 p.m. at Pete Dye Golf Club.
