The GED® exam is aligned with the College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Adult Education used in West Virginia adult education classrooms. It assesses knowledge and skills in four subjects:

Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)

Mathematical Reasoning

Science

Social Studies

Adults in Harrison and Doddridge Counties (and surrounding areas) who have not completed high school and wish to prepare for the HiSET exam (an alternative to the GED).

How Our Online Prep Works

We partner with Essential Education, an online, self-paced study platform covering all four GED subject areas.

Register in person

Visit the Education Services Office at United Way of HDC to receive your username and password for Essential Education.

Study online (30–50 hours)

Complete 30–50 hours of coursework at your pace. If you need help, individual tutoring is available in our Education Services Office.

Get scheduled for the GED® pre-test

Once your online hours are complete, we’ll refer you to Judy Ely (Adult Education, Bridgeport) who will schedule your GED pre-test.

Test fees covered after pre-test

After you pass the pre-test, the State of West Virginia pays for your official GED testing.

Good to know: If you pass any subject (e.g., Mathematical Reasoning), you do not need to retake that subject again. You can retest individual subjects until you’ve passed all four.
