Medical Respite Care

Providing Healing Space and Wraparound Support for Those Recovering from Illness and Homelessness

United Way HDC's Resilience Collaborative proudly operates West Virginia’s first and only Medical Respite Care (MRC) program recognized by the National Institute for Medical Respite Care (NIMRC). Designed to bridge a critical service gap, our MRC program supports individuals who are too ill or frail to recover on the streets or in shelters—but not sick enough to remain hospitalized. By combining stable housing, basic medical services, and individualized case management, the MRC program helps clients recover safely while addressing deeper health and social challenges.

How Medical Respite Care Works

Within our Coordinated Clinical Care model, participants receive support from trusted clinical and social service teams who specialize in the intersection of homelessness and healthcare. Together, we help resolve both immediate health concerns and long-term barriers related to the Social Determinants of Health.

Accessing Care

Medical Respite referrals are accepted from:

  • WVU Medicine – United Hospital Center
  • Local homeless outreach teams

Please Note:
ResCo’s Medical Respite Care – Transitional Housing (MRC-TH) is not a traditional homeless service.

  • MRC-TH rental properties function as transitional healing spaces, not permanent housing
  • Residency does not confer tenancy rights
  • Participation is limited to individuals who meet program qualifications
